THE LAST TUNNEL OF THE SOLNTSEVSKAYA METRO LINE TO VNUKOVO AIRPORT HAS BEEN TUNNELLED

“The ‘Natalia’ tunnel boring machine (TBM) has completed the construction of the right running tunnel between the prospective Pykhtino and Vnukovo stations of the Solntsevskaya Line”, said Andrey Bochkarev, Deputy Mayor of Moscow on Urban Planning and Construction.

Mosinzhproekt Group of Companies is a general designer and general contractor to build new lines and stations of the Moscow Metro.

“The tunnel between the Pykhtino and Vnukovo stations, which is more than one kilometre long, is the last tunnel in the new section of the Solntsevskaya Line that will link the line with Vnukovo airport. The ‘Natalia’ TBM covered the Novomoskovsky and Western Administrative Districts of Moscow under the Borovskoye Highway and the village of Vnukovo. The tunnelling has been completed on the construction site in front of the airport, near Vokzalnaya Square”, informed Andrey Bochkarev.

Yuri Kravtsov, General Director of Mosinzhproekt JSC, added that the Pykhtino and Vnukovo station complexes are also being built at the new section.

“The construction of the main structures is underway at the Vnukovo station. The in-situ concreting is in a high degree of readiness at the Pykhtino station, architectural finishing and installation of utilities are underway”, said Yuri Kravtsov.

The head of the holding added that the “Natalia” tunnel boring machine had previously built the right running tunnel between the Pykhtino station and the existing Rasskazovka station at the new section.

“In June, the ‘Rosa’ TBM finished tunnelling the left running tunnel on the Pykhtino-Vnukovo section and, before that, the left running tunnel between Pykhtino and Rasskazovka. Thus, the ‘Natalia’ and ‘Rosa’ crews built all four tunnels of the new section of the Solntsevskaya Line with a total length of around 6.5 kilometres”, said Yuri Kravtsov.

Recall, in addition to the tunnels, the Pykhtino – Vnukovo running line also includes a 460 metre-long metro bridge, which will become the twelfth metro bridge in Moscow and the second longest after the Luzhnetsky metro bridge across the Moskva River.

It is expected that after the commissioning of the new section of the Solntsevskaya Line, the transport accessibility to Troitsky and Novomoskovky Administrative Districts of Moscow will be enhanced globally and Vnukovo will become the first Russian airport with its own metro station available.

Sergei Sobyanin, Mayor of Moscow, announced on his social media accounts that builders have passed all tunnels on the prospective section of the Solntsevskaya Line to Vnukovo Airport.

“The last TBM has finished work on the section from the Pykhtino station to the Vnukovo station. This is an important stage of the whole project, and now the builders still have to complete the above-ground part of the project. The metro bridge over the Likova River is more than 80% complete”, said Sergei Sobyanin.
