TRAFFIC HAS BEEN LAUNCHED AT 65% SECTIONS OF THE MOSCOW’S CHORD HIGHWAY SYSTEM, SAYS ANDREY BOCHKAREV

205 km of roads have already been commissioned

“Motorists can already use 65% of the sections of the chord highway system in the capital”, said Andrey Bochkarev, Deputy Mayor of Moscow on Urban Planning and Construction. Mosinzhproekt Engineering Holding is the general contractor and general designer of a number of sections of the South-Eastern Chord and Southern Rockade.

“The total length of the highway system, consisting of the North-Eastern, North-Western and South-Eastern Chords, as well as the Southern Rockade, will be 362 km, which is comparable to the length of four Third Transport Rings. As of today, 205 km of roads have already been commissioned, which is 65% of the total length,” said Andrey Bochkarev.

According to him, the North-West Chord is now fully accessible to motorists.

“The North-East Chord will ‘start moving’ within two years, at the end of 2023. The South-Eastern Chord is under active design and construction and is scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2023. By this time, the construction of the Southern Rockade will be completed. Three sections have already been built here, and five more are under construction,” the Deputy Mayor added.

For his part, Yuri Kravtsov, General Director of Mosinzhproekt JSC, said that a number of engineering structures are being constructed along sections of the South-Eastern Chord.

“For example, four overpasses are being built on the eighth section of the South-Eastern Chord, and five overpasses are being built at the interchange of the South-Eastern Chord with Volgogradsky Prospekt,” explained the holding head, also recalling that builders are simultaneously working on the extension of Verkhnie Polya Street to include it in the Southern Rockade.

The creation of a chord system of highways is the main project for the modern development of the capital’s road and transport framework. They are designed to connect the remote areas of the city directly to each other, thereby reducing the overall load on the street and road network of the central districts, the Moscow Ring Road and the Third Transport Ring. Experts found a chord system to be 20% more efficient than a closed loop system.
