Vnukovo will become the first Russian airport with its own metro station
“The ‘Rosa’ tunnel boring machine has started the construction of the left running tunnel between the Pykhtino and the Vnukovo stations of the new section of the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya Line”, informed Andrey Bochkarev, Deputy Mayor of Moscow on Urban Planning and Construction.
Mosinzhproekt Engineering Holding is a general designer and general contractor to construct new lines and stations of the Moscow Metro.
“The ‘Rosa’ TBM has started the construction of the left running tunnel which is about 1 km long between the Pykhtino and the Vnukovo stations on the yellow line section to be extended. Earlier, this TBM has completed the tunnelling towards the operating Rasskazovka station,” said Andrey Bochkarev.
According to the Deputy Mayor, when the previous tunnelling had been completed, the TBM was dismantled during several weeks at the site behind the Rasskazovka headshunts, relocated to a new site on the bank of the Likova river opposite to the Pykhtino station, and installed in the entry pit.

“On the way from the city centre to the airport, trains which depart from the Pykhtino station will cross the river over the new metro bridge, before going into the underground tunnel towards Vnukovo. In-situ concreting is now underway at the Pykhtino and Vnukovo stations. The landmark structures are 64% and 28% complete, respectively. The entire new section of the line is nearly one-third complete,” clarified Andrey Bochkarev.
According to Yuri Kravtsov, General Director of Mosinzhproekt JSC, the “Rosa” TBM will run its way at a depth of 10 to 16 metres.
“The work will be carried out in clay soil with stiff loam along the existing car tunnel under the roadway of Tsentral’naya Street of Vnukovo and the bridge structures of the flyover to the airport terminal complex. The tunnel route contains abundant utilities,” specified Yuri Kravtsov.
The head of the holding reminded that this TBM was previously used in the construction of the tunnels of the southern section of the Big Circle Line between the Novatorskaya and the Kakhovskaya stations, having covered about 4.3 km under the ground.
Earlier, Sergei Sobyanin, Mayor of Moscow, informed on his social media page that the line would run along the Aeroexpress route, straight to the airport.
“In addition to air travellers, almost 350,000 residents and those working in New Moscow will be able to use the new section of the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya line. Primarily, in the neighbourhoods along Borovskoye Highway and Kievskoye Highway,” wrote Sergei Sobyanin.
It is expected that after the commissioning of the new section of the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya Line, the transport accessibility to Troitsky and Novomoskovky Districts of Moscow will be enhanced globally and Vnukovo will become the first Russian airport with its own metro station available.
